The importance of the Padron

It is important for the future of your community and the services that are offered, that if you live in Spain you sign on to the local Padron.

Spanish law changed in 2008 stating that everybody who is registered on the local Padron must re-register every 5 years and if you don’t then you will be removed.

For those registering for the first time, you have 3 months to apply for their residencia in order for their status to be legal in Spain.

Spain’s national statistics estimate that approximately 40.000 foreign residents will be cut from the Padron as of January 1st 2015, these are estimated figures at the moment and it is becoming increasingly more important  for individual municipals to encourage and ensure as many international residents are registered on the Padron.

If these figures reduce it will have a massive impact on the local services that are provided in every municipality, for example – buses, schooling, rubbish collections, health care and local taxes.  Local councils receive funding from the government for each person registered on the Padron, if the numbers reduces so will the funding.  This could mean that local rates could be increased to help cover the costs.

It is important for the future of your community and the services that are offered, that if you live in Spain you sign on to the local Padron otherwise vital services such as the number of healthcare professionals, teachers and police officers could be the first thing to suffer the cuts.
